Welcome to the official website of the diploma thesis "Swiss Internet Analysis". On this page you will find news and will be kept up to date what's going on with the analysis. Thanks for coming frequently.

This is an official Swiss Internet analysis, supported by SWITCH (registrar for '.ch' and '.li' domains), BAKOM, IXEurope Telehouse Facilities AG and several other companies and Swiss ISP's.

Apr 10, 2003: The presentation occured at the SWINOG #6 in Bern (agenda). There were many interesting questions and feedback was great, thanks!

Feb 13, 2003: There may be a presentation of the work and its results at the next SWINOG Meeting: you will find more details in the mailing-list archives.

Dec 02, 2002: TCP-Dump analysis part of the work will be continued in 2003 as a "Semesterarbeit" under the direction of Prof. H.Weibel.

Oct 28: Diploma Thesis finished, 219 Pages :-)

Oct 11: News paper article about our diploma thesis on http://www.computerworld.ch

Oct 03/04: operating system fingerprinting scans started in the morning (using nmap -O -p 25,80,110,993,995,143,443,20029). This will probably trigger some IDS around... but this should be the last test we are running :-). The next steps will occur offline (analysis & statistics).

Oct 02: POP3 scans started this morning: connection to port 110, CAPA, QUIT, disconnect. IMAP will follow shortly this morning too. 18h: IMAPSSL and POP3SSL scans started at around 5 p.m.: don't worry if you get connections on ports 993 and 995 :-)

Oct 01: SMTP scans over 30k hosts running, POP3 and IMAP will follow. First "public" reactions in the usenet newsgroup news://ch.admin.

Sep 30: first tcpdump scan server installed for 36h at the backbone of a popular swiss news server

Sep 20: HTTP, MAIL and DNS software scans started. During the next days around 300,000 hosts will be analyzed.

Sep 11: Contacts with several ISP's and news servers to receive log files

Sep 6, 2002: Kickoff meeting 11:00 a.m. in Winterthur
